I know that that's the original construction, but I've always used
_underscores_ to indicate italics. I don't use slashes, and will rarely use
the *asterisks* for bolding something.
Maybe that's just the way I learned to do it on AOL chat rooms a decade and
change ago, but that's how I see it, and I think it works pretty well.
