Love of Objects

Along similar lines, what I find fascinating (not
arousing, but fascinating) is the weirder realms of
pornography: people who get off by dressing up as
babies, or by seeing pictures of women with food
spilled on them or with their feet submerged in muck,
or by dressing up as giant stuffed animals, or by
seeing images of giant balloons that are
justabouttopop! The exploitation level in such
subgenres is probably a lot less than in mainstream
porn (unless you are the model for a sploshie mag and
are required to cover your own cleaning bill), but it
makes you wonder about what exactly is arousing about
such things. That kind of stuff shows that porno
isn't art because it's utilitarian. Or to quote David
Lamborn Wilson, "pornography is pornography because it
works." If it doesn't get one off, it isn't good
porn. Ironically, this relates to Tore's comment
about Gaddis to the effect that Gaddis is a good
writer who isn't a pleasure to read. Porno without
pleasure is pointless, and unless one's an academic or
an anthropologist, one wouldn't bother with it. But
I'd submit that art without pleasure can sometimes
still be quite worthwhile.
