So, the rep has called in Deuce with implications that he did not  
take out Webb, because Webb-style bombings continue. A common over- 
simplification, thinking that taking out a prominent figure will end  
something actually much bigger than that person. Pisses off Deuce who  
gets calmed down by a concealed double-action .32. (Most things are  
double in this novel):

Later, signs point to the possibility (in Deuce's mind) that rep- 
inquiry supports the Webb-is-not-yet-dead theory. He doesn't seem to  
realize that his employers are not the only foax upset by the murders.
