Mirror Mirror on the wall
Who's the wickedest of all
Three blind mice, deepest fear
Welcome to the House of Mirrors

[276:1] "Jennie Rogers's House of Mirrors"

Jennie Rogers

(b. Pittsburgh, July 4, 1843- d. Denver 1909; b. Fairmount Cemetery
under the name Leah Wood).

Leah J. Tehme ran through several marriages and even more names
before arriving in Denver in 1880. She gravitated to Market Street,
the wickedest street in the Rockies. On that boulevard of the
bagnios, she bought a small parlour house from Mattie Silks and began
recruiting the most seductive brides of the multitudes. These
solicitous sisters of perpetual indulgence made Jennie’s place an
intimate haven where gentlemen could enjoy the finest cigars, the
best of brandies, and the most nubile of discreet companionship.

[276:5] "polyhedral of mirrors"

A shape formed by three or more planes intersecting at a common
point. [American heritage Dictionary]

The mirror motif again. This time with more complexity to transform a
co-ed into a whore or temptress.

This Denver reflection is dominated by references to eyes and seeing/
gazing, from (1) the intial spark to admiring herself in mirrors to
(2) Frank staring/gazing at Wren to (3) Wren seeking another girl's
eyes to (4) a description of Wren's opium half-masted eyelids to (5)
Frank and Wren looking 'eye-to-eye' to (6) kohl around her eyes
running down in tears. http://tinyurl.com/2vp9xv

[276:23] "dress cavalry helmet"

[276:37] "kohl" - (cf, antimony at [275:9])

A cosmetic preparation, such as powdered antimony sulfide, used
especially in the Middle East to darken the rims of the eyelids. (AHD)

[276:39] "incomprehensible though wicked peignor"

So what do you think this Wren-induced trip to a brothel is all
about. Especially in light of the sexuality in the previous section's
Unholy Trinity? While Lake is rather flat, one-dimensional, Wren is
constantly transmogrified from scholar to whore to seeker. Why is
Frank placed up against Wren?
