[614.9-10] "And he withdrew again out into the empty suburban lamplight, the
stridently unpopulated evening."

Cf. Lew's first impression of Stuffed Edge:

[610.12-13] "... strangely for this suburban hour, very few windows
hereabouts seemed to be lighted at all."

Earlier on 232: "Despite the growing presence of electric street
illumination, London in resolute municipal creep out of the Realm of Gas, he
had begun to discover a structure to the darkness ..." etc.

Cf. also: "As the evening crept across the valley, and farm stoves were
poked up to working heat, and lamps lit indoors whose light soon filled the
windowframes, outshining the departing sunlight ..." etc.

One might also recall that the current chapter opens with Inspector Aychance
"angelically revealed in early sunbeams" (605).
