The Fourth Dimension's 'alternative' to the 'real world' is explored
further, hence "... more used to expressing vectors without pictures, purely
as an array of coefficients, no relation to anything physical, not even
space itself ...". The future is invoked with "powered flight poised like a
new-feathered bird at the edge of history": no need for time-travel here.
And then, from 'the future' to 'the past', Kit recalling "his brainless
sojourn to the Vibe embrace". His antipathy to golf doesn't affect his
consideration of the ball's flight, described here as "its destiny in the
sky". The 'new thinking' that attracts Kit here is a liberation from the
Vibe-infected past.
