OK. I picked up the 1987 Current Biography just now off the shelf, which
was mentioned in that New England link.

Current Biography says

Thomas Ruggles Pynchon Jr was born May 8th, 1937, the oldest of the three
children of Thomas Ruggles Pynchon Sr and Katherine Frances Bennett
Pynchon. He had a sister, Judith and a brother, John. His father, an
industrial surveyor, presided over the local Republican club and was town
supervisor of Oyster bay... I'll also post this to the list in case it's of
interst.

... According to unsubstanciated rumors, Thomas Pynchon is said to have
been briefly married during his college years. In the Chicago Tribune
article by Helen Dudar, who interviewed some of his acquaintances, Pynchon
emerges as "a restless, rootless man who lives, as unencumbered as
possible, from place to place adn coast to coast in borrowed or sublet
quarters. He seems to walk in and out of people's lives as if they were
rest stops on a transconctinental highway.... He is good company and a
fairly accomplished cook, tending toward vegetarianism.... His friends are
expected to honor his lust for anonymity, introducing him to their friends
by whatever fake name he is using." Irving Goodman, the former head of
Viking Press, who lunched with Pynchon in the spring of 1984, described him
to Helen Dudar as being neatly dressed in a sports shirt and jeans, as
standing over six feet tall, and as lean, with graying black hair and a
mustache. Goodman was surprised by the "ease and comfort" of their
meeting...

Does OBA have brothers or sisters? Don't know that I've ever heard.

I used Ancestry Plus library edition to discover Edythe Mae Pynchon's
genealogy and relationship to EFT as a first cousin. Check your local
library's website to see if they furnish Ancestry Library Edition.

Her Dad was Joseph Moyses Pynchon, born 18 May 1904. He was one brother
 of
OBA's father, Thomas Pynchon IV, who was his little brother. I also see
 an
elder brother named William who was 11 in 1910.

In 1910 Thomas Pynchon IV was 3 years old, and Joseph Moyses Pynchon
 was 5.
Their mother Carrie Moyses Pynchon, was the wife of WHC Pynchon, or
 William
H. Pynchon. Interestingly, in 1910, WH Pynchon died, so by time the
 census
was gathered that year, she was listed as a widow. She was 41 when
 Tom's
father was 3. The head of household then was her brother Merrill W
 Moyles
and they lived in Oyster Bay.

So, when Tom's father Thomas Pynchon IV had his children, and her
 father
Joseph M Pynchon had his children, they would have been first cousins,
 Tom
and Edythe. Who knows if they played together.

Fun with the local public library.

Jill
