I think we musn't mistake the War's desires for the bland fact that
Hitler and Co. ideologically and methodically masterminded mass
murder.  Pynchon decided not to focus on the Holocaust as we
understand it, mostly the killing of Jews in continental Europe,
though he covers it via allusion to past holocausts, and directly via
a throw away sentence and the like.

I admit its a conundrum--by blaming the War exclusively, we lose the
direct responsibility for atrocities by Hitler and others; by focusing
on the human level of mass murder, we lose the broad systemic enablers
(capitalism, markets, consumerism, what have u)  that brought to scale
what would have been the wearisome ravings of bunch of street thugs,
as noticeable as piles of shit in the gutter.
