The Temperance card, 14th major arcana, and the observant angel in 
the middle of the tree of life:

who's famous poem 'The Duino Elegies' is placed in several sections
of Gravity's Rainbow. Its placement on the tree of life is near the center 
of the tree. I think of the angels in 'Wings of Desire', and their role as 
observers.

I also think that Pynchon's treatment of the 'Master Cabal' includes a lot of 
personal historical reference:
