"Yes, it is likely that it is simply Americanized French spelling. I
have seen much worse: Bodock for Bois d'Arc (bow wood) is one case in
point. The worst is Smackover, Arkansas (chemin couvert/covered

I also sent inquries to an historian, as well as another
anthropologist whose specialization would be even closer to the mark
here.  Rather than a 'simple" typo, This may be a nod to a specific
source here on Pynchon's part, or to good ol' (if i may coin a term
here) Framericaise in general (and thus to good ol' European
colonialism/American imperialism as well) ...

P.S.--yes, I corrected my own typo there as well ...
