I've got my references scrambled, turn to page 559 of the first book that comes up:
"History of Congregationalism from about A.D. 250
to the Present Time": By George Punchard. My Bad, It's a proofreading problem.

"I can only try to be good but I know I will fail
again and again. It is a constant struggle."
In the upper right side of the window you should see "page" You can try 559 there .
Otherwise you can slide down on the blue bar on the right and go to "Search in this book".
Then type in 'Pynchon'. It's tonnes of fun!
This is the book with the quote,:
William Ellery Channing, Minister of Religion By John White Chadwick

I believe this is the statue being referred to. As William was a heretic [after all]
one might understand a certain 'ritual reluctance' in nameing names.
