I can't find the reference right now, but a while ago on this list
there was an account by someone who knew him and lived with him when
he was living in California many years ago - knew him well enough to
have partied with him. He lost contact with him when Pychon moved,
but a number of years later accidentally encountered him on the
street/beach and said "Hi." Pynchon reportedly stared at the many for
a few minutes and then took off running.

A pretty strange story, but it fits with the story of him climbing out
a window to evade a reporter that had tracked him down in Mexico.
Recluse or not, he's very protective of his privacy, and has been
known for erratic paranoid behavior.
