Mr. Haney,
Yes, I put down my own misunderstanding as a self-absorbed
way to agree with Paul's insight, it seems.....so,
besides your very good explication I will throw off this:
If the Chums "stand for America" (among other things) as
a good reviewer, John Leonard, has said, then this remark
of Lindsay's, I believe---I am away from my copy at the moment---
about immigrants as "a rising tide of World Anarchism"
captures two things: a major attitude of the Established and a hint at Pynchon's
affection for the new societal underdogs, the new lowest in the society, the
"poor huddled masses yearning to breathe free"-----I might suggest.

?? indeed? You seem to be castigating yourself
here and in your next memo (with the Zen stick)
-- the "rising tide of World anarchism"
and Paul's references (which seem to be getting even
better and more relevant as he proceeds) --
seem to have triggered a feeling in you that you've
been missing something all along.
I'm familiar with that feeling, sometimes enjoyable!
I'd welcome an explication here -
because, I hear you saying "arrggh" but not
"ok now I get it: the rising tide of World Anarchism
is equated in the minds of bigots with the (then)
stateless Jewry (also mentioned by Fleetwood's
Jewish friend in Africa, who summarized the idea of
property as boundary-drawing...probably importantly),
and therefore thus & such pertains, making sense where
before I perceived none..."
or something more cogent, either along those lines
(if I'm correct) or others (please enlighten)
