               Paul Mackin:
The Oyster Bay Pynchons might not have had a lot of
money relative to their namesakes out in Newport but
they raised the most famous Pynchon of them all.

As I recall, T.R. IV was a surveyor---decent money, but Oyster Bay ain't no
Scarsdale. Still, if our boy gets started up by looking into history books---is
it safe to say he's read a couple two three?---he's gonna run into the family
name repeatedly, particularly what with the books found in places like
Cornell in the '50's. Loads of what I'm finding on-line comes from Harvard.
And from there Tommy looks into R & D and contracts associated
with the family name, T.R.III's science chops, and before you know it,
the boy's babbling on and on about Agfa and I.G. Farben, preterites and
signs and wonders revealed in the sky.
