FYI: This past weekend I was with a friend who used to work for Amoco. We got into a discussion of Pynchon and I mentioned the bit in Gravity's Rainbow where Slothrop discovers that Dutch Shell Oil was in bed with the Germans - letting them use the roof of their building in Amsterdam to guide V-2's onto their British partner Shell oil in London. He told me that at that time Shell Oil was fragmented and each area a little fiefdom to itself - Shell oil in London really would not have known what Shell oil in the Netherlands was up to..or at least, that's what the official documents say, heh heh
