Two of the three world premieres will be works by outstanding Australian
composer, and TQO's 2008 Composer-in-Residence Brian Howard in Gravity's
Rainbow and Earthshine. The other is a Percussion Concerto by Brisbane-based
composer Freeman McGrath, to be performed by upcoming Australian
percussionist Adam Jeffrey in the Contempo series, presented by ABC Classic
FM host Julian Day.

On March 29 the Maestro Fritzsch Gala will begin a new chapter in the
history of TQO," said Director of Artistic Planning at The Queensland
Orchestra, Tom Woods. "The Gala will provide audiences with an excellent
foretaste of the exciting new direction Maestro Fritzsch hopes to take TQO.
The performance of Wagner's Die Walküre (Act 1) is a terrific example of the
great 'Opera in Concert' tradition, while we will also feature the world
premiere performance of Howard's Gravity's Rainbow," he said "Gravity's
Rainbow takes it name from a novel by Thomas Pynchon, one of postmodernism's
great texts, full of brilliant imagery, virtuosity of style and an
interpretation of the modern life. His score in Gravity's Rainbow reflects
this and more, as is his signature in orchestrally interpreting major works
of literature."
