the reason I said _them_ is po-mo is that the author
intrudes into the story as a character.
That is actually one of the very few features of
postmodernism that I would recognize a morsos fundamento from.
Isn't it? (gee, maybe it isn't...)

Hope I didn't misguide you...

I'm not as widely read as I'd like, but imho she's as good as any
and better than most. (though I'm truly, truly not into
"ranking" authors)

I think these smatterings from Wikipedia are fair and accurate:

"...mixes Gothic estrangement with high social observation....
unconscious forces, seduction, incest, violence, and rape,
sometimes to the point of sensationalism. She has written
in a variety of genres, eras and landscapes....contain
strong feminist overtones and use of the Gothic device
to explore the ambiguities of gender and the sexual bases
of fantasy."

I would add that she tends to adopt the point of
view of the preterite, or focus on the activities
of the suffering, with what I consider to be
great compassion and insight.

There may be political reasons, gender bias, and/or envy (of
her prolixity & commercial success) behind negative
comments, possibly?
