Pynchon and DeLillo (and Mr. Mumbo Jumbo, for that matter) share crucial
techniques for approaching The Worst Things crabwise, with sidelong glances
and wisecracks and pie fights. I had a reference to DeLillo in an earlier
draft of that last post -- you took the words right out of my mouth.
(Or as Gladney sez of his German teacher: "Once he reached in with his right
hand to adjust my tongue. It was a strange and terrible moment, an act of
haunting intimacy. No one had ever handled my tongue before.")
