Dave,
Thanks for this great stuff....i will 'dive into", so to speak, more ot it but I have looked at some.
Over the weekend I read a long piece on Ezra Pound and his magazine Blast and 'futurism'
of the time. Remember Pound and Eliot's relationship and TRPs love (and homages) to Eliot).
according to the author, Marinetti's futurism was intended to be like a bomb {BLAST] at the bourgeoisie.....Pound was influenced and believed that the right art and "good science' was necessary for the modernn artist......
TRP takes apart, I think, some of Marinetti's ideas in AtD.....the faith in science/technology
for one......(must reread).......
But as AtD cover, I see the painting as akin to the von Braun epigraph in GR........intended and ironic at the same time (if that makes sense)?.....
As Toreye wrote. The Juggernaut of Modernity captured in the painting......as one of Pynchon's tropes----planes from the sky-----dive on a modern city........

In the nick of time, as my cloth ed has long since fallen apart (have
another tucked away for safekeeping), I've been juggling a
couple/three library copies @ various locations. Anyway, recall the
painting on the cover ...

The painting seems to have been making the rounds of late, which may
have been how it came to the book's designer's, or even Pynchon's,
attention. Anything perhaps relevant to be gleaned from the Italian
lge sites? Any comments on the use of a Bltz-eye-view painting by a
fascist sympathizer? On the change in cover design at all? Save the
transparent dust jacket, M&D was by and large left as is, so ...
