Misc. p.s. to Inner Sands section just completed...just fyi

  "They [mankind] could not name even one of the fifty-three portals to the soul"...p first
   
  "The bounties of space, of infinite outwardness, were three: empty heroics, low comedy, and
  pointless death"......Outwardness lost, at last, its imagined attractions"
   
  "Only inwardness remained to be explored."
  "Only the human sould remained terra incognito."
  "This was the beginning og goodness and wisdom."
  " What were people like in olden times, with their souls yet unexplored?"
   
  this last line seems to me to be one of the questions Pynchon asks without asking outright
  in his oeuvre.   
   
  Anyone have a thought or counterthought?
