Rumours and reaction: is the talk ("coming over ... to give a talk") that
Minkowski eventually gives the same talk that was announced at the outset?
The venue changes, more people attend than was expected; and Minkowski
himself, though present, (a) "look[s] like a businessman out for some fun",
and (b) is represented by the equations he writes on the board, mathematical
symbols that Roswell and Merle will then 'translate' into English after the
speaker's departure ("well, it look's like we've got us ."). The lecture
continues in an empty hall (until the equations are wiped from the board, of
course). Another kind of translation is indicated at the end of the passage,
theory into practice: "... all's we need to do's translate this here into
hardware ..." (459). On 455 Roswell refuses to let go his intellectual
property, so when does 'translation' become 'theft'?
