Typical Pynchonesque scatology, reminiscent of various and sundry meditations and events involving shit in GR (Slothrop going down the toilet in search of a harmonica; the Domina Nocturna scene; "Shit from Shinola"; etc.) and assholes in virtually every novel (keep in mind his literary device of fear/paranoia and how it affects a character's asshole, rectum, lower bowel, etc.).
