Possibly continuing the Chicago connection, Pynchon is perhaps making reference to longtime Chicago journalist Carol Marin (pronounced like "marine"). Note the accent over the "i" in Pynchon's text.
Carol Marin began her career in Chicago in 1978 as an anchor and reporter for WMAQ-TV, where her hard-hitting journalism focused on investigations of political and judicial corruption, organized crime, and the government.
By 1997, with a George Foster Peabody award, National Emmy award, an Alfred I. duPont Columbia University award, and a National UPI Reporter of the Year award, Marin had been established as one of the city's leading journalists.
At this time, she joined the WBBM-TV news team and continued her work on investigative and political stories.
Marin worked as a correspondent for CBS News from 1997-2002 working on such shows as 60 Minutes, 60 Minutes II, The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather, and 48 Hours.
Marin departed CBS and became a columnist for the Chicago Tribune in 2003.
In 2004, Marin returned to NBC5 as an investigative reporter and is currently a political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times. In 2006, she took over the political editor spot at NBC5. She is also the co-director for the DePaul Documentary Project and is President and CEO of her production company, Marin Corp Productions.
