Discussion 'extra credit' question for all the p-listers into more music than others

Somebody has written that what one needs probably to know most to
  "get' Thomas R. Pynchon's work is....music...
   
  Since I don't know music that well--I know what I like as the philistines say---I have
  always thought that was wrong.......
   
  Agree? Disagree?
   
  Compared to knowing, say, Weber? Norman O. Brown, religious history of ALL kinds?, science???
