I've never really paid enough attention to SY to have an opinion. And
since they've had such a large following, that tells you all that I've
been mostly out of the loop for "indie/avante/noise" music in general
(not a good thing).
I think that's because New Orleans is sort of anti-electronic (or
noise, or...?) music in general, having such an identity with the
Blues/Jazz tradition, and especially brass street-bands a la the Jazz
funeral type, that the City is a bit resistant to such. WWOZ, the
founding radio station for the N.O. Jazz & Heritage Festival is open
to new/experimental music only very late at night, and as a result
ultimately becomes a bit hide-bound. And having only one college
radio station (WTUL) here, my exposure here is very limited.
So, Henry, who would you consider SY's "betters?"
And what would you consider SY's best music?

DC's 9:30 club), and I wasn't, and I'm not, impressed. To me, they're the "Lost in Translation" of music, i.e. they impress the hell out of people who haven't heard their betters, and who think that they now have an appreciation of indie art. A-and I don't think they're fun, either! Naked, naked, naked!
