FWIW, in truth, if I had to pick one desert island rock band's recordings, for me it'd still be the Beatles.

As a young woman in the '70s and '80s, I was always anxious when guys I'd meet would ask me what music I was into.  I'd usually just tell them I wasn't into music (which, I guess, I really wasn't) to avoid their seething contempt at the dumb girl when I mentioned The Beatles, etc.  Over the years I've evolved to the point where I no longer give a flying fuck what they think (and I listen to a wider variety of music now that I have the ability to, uh, download it).  The point is, the more-musical-than-thou thing is as much about machismo as it is about hipness.
