Now we get to the violence of an Uskok revenge murder:
874.2 various instruments in the abandoned factory:
** gimlet - to drill holes in wood

** butcher's saw -

** Montenegrin Gasser:

Montenegrin Gasser-style revolvers were made by numerous small
Belgian and Austrian firms, as well as by Leopold Gasser.

874.4 - .7 "To save everyone trouble," Vastroslav said, "there is
nothing you can tell us. Nothing you can pay us. You have stepped
into a long history of blood and penance, and the coin of the
transactions is struck not from metal but from Time."
Long history referring to the battles between the Croatian and
Serbian Uskoks and the Ottomans, the Venetians, etc. Uskoks were
"hired" by Austrians who didn't pay them so the Uskok's turned to
the sea for pirating advantages. Eventually they were disbanded by
Austria and but old hatreds die hard - especially in that area it seems.
Btw, Clissan (Vlado Clissan) is an old Uskok name found in Istria,
one of the Croatian areas where the group was relocated in the early
17th century.

874.28 pensione near San Stae
* a pensione is a cheap hostel or boarding house
* San Stae is a big lovely church - this is a cool photo with
pensiones and water:

874: 28-29 "shirtwaist and skirt"
more fashion:

1900s fashions - take your pick
in those days a shirtwaist was a blouse which looked somewhat like a
man's shirt

the skirt could have been in any number of styles, walking probably

874. 29 "two hundred lire"
Lire were used in Italy in Napoleon's Kingdom of Italy (included
Venice) as well as from 1861 to 2002 - I guess we're to conclude
that 200 lire is a lot of money.
** bobbed hair
an Edwardian era "bobbed" hairstyle
http://www.erasofelegance.com/entertainment/movies/golden/bowl27.jpg
The bob became popular a bit later than 1908. As a fad it
originated in 1915 with a dancing couple but it caught on because of
changes the war brought. It became a statement of rebellion,
independence and equality. It was popular with the suffragettes.
Yashmeen's wearing it seems appropriate to parts of the rest of this
section. http://www.hairarchives.com/private/1920s.htm
If Yashmeen is wearing a shirtwaist outfit and a bob haircut she's
distinctly in both camps, Eduardian and flapper. Oh well - that
probably suits her and the book.
