yeah, I remember reading these sections in a dreamy way,
didn't really wake up till the action went back to America

Usually that means that I'm not digesting the content
fully due to new ideas, or impressions that don't fit my preconceptions
- preconceptions like that Pynchon alternates between deep
dives into Americana, and war/atrocity zones -
so it means these sections are worth a closer look
(once again I'm glad to be in on the group read)

There's a huge thumping atrocity in the Tunguska Event,
true, but what we're treated to here is a series of potential
Shamballas, starting with the town where Yasmeen's guardian
lives, the landscape that morphs into a city for Kit (maybe the same
capped city that the Chums see uncapped, or its birefringent twin)
the place where Prance gets off the British Empire train and
boards the Inconvenience, Tuva...none of them precisely Shamballah
but all of them having elements of it
