I agree that proto quantum physics mathematics is a major aspect of the
evolving language of the times that motivates the book. But I do not think
you have to know the mathematical notation. Since it's a fantasy book-
there's scientific apparatus that would not ever be invented, it serves the
novel well to carry on in the flowery concepts of such a displaced math.
Speculative / fantasy requires that. Philip Pullman is one other example.
Crack open really old Chemistry books (Like the kind TRP II probably read)
or Optics books and look under light and atmosphere and you get the stuff
of speculative fiction. Language of the Spheres... Luminiferous ether. I'm
stating that a sort of pre- quantum physics math language took a break from
reality, went to his projected world, then, like Robin says, is again being
used today.
