  I'd say 'because' since 'as if' would have been an easy clarification that OBA would not have overlooked. (However, there have been typographical mistakes).

or, perhaps, "while" or "during the time that" -
ie "to be invisible ... as beneath its dark authority danger ruled..."

similar to something like "to fiddle ... as Rome burned..."
"the little dog laughed to hear them play...as the cow jumped over the moon"

...and maybe ... naw, couldn't be... a reference to the Jim Carrey
movie, "The Mask"?
