Vineland begins and ends in waking from dreams. We begin with Zoyd's
premonitions from another "deep nudge from forces unseen", a
connection to those SSI checks that are ultimately connected to the
Police State Zoyd somehow got scammed into. We end with Prairie waking
from dreams of reaching towards Brock Vond:
The small meadow shimmered in the starlight, and her
promises grew more extravagant as she drifted into the
lucid thin layer of waking dreaming, . . .
. . .sun blinding in the cobwebs on the wet grass, a redtail
hawk in an updraft soaring above the ridgeline, Sunday
morning about to unfold, when Prairie woke to a warm and
persistent tongue all over her face.
In both cases sunlight is the active element, the rousing
element."Wachet Auf" like the Bachman sez.
"Sleepers, wake!" the watch cry pealeth,
while slumber deep each eyelid sealeth:
Awake, Jerusalem, awake!
Midnight's solemn hour is tolling,
and seraph-notes are onward rolling;
They call on us our part to take.
Come forth, ye virgins wise:
the Bridegroom comes, arise!
Alleluia!
Each lamp be bright
with ready light
to grace the marriage feast tonight.

Again, the Stellar Jay mimics the cry of the Redtail Hawk.
A curious note, compare "Later than usual on summer morning in 1984"
to the opening of Orwell's "1984":
"It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were
striking thirteen."
Also remember that Stellar Jays---I'll personally attest that the
annoying little buggers are all over the physical enviorns of
Vineland---are quite blue. "Blue painted blue", like the song "Volare":
... except that she would only shift away those eyes of blue
painted blue, as the Italian oldie goes, shift them away to
sea, weather, any prop in visual reach, for deploying that
blue whammy was just as good - she knew it - as touching,
or taking touch away.
