As the wheel turns- what was once up is now not so up.
Current events have changed in such a way that the meeting
between Hector and Zoyd is open for renewed interpretation.
During that lunch, we are in Zoyd's head from beginning to
end. At the time the book came out, that felt uncomfortable.
But given these times ("On this day... at this defining
moment") with the rapid changes occurring in America and the
world, his pov feels different.
The scene itself is an amazing bit of writing. Hector and Zoyd
are exquisitely drawn, too facile in their repartee, but thus,
able to provide the audience with a huge amount of insight
into their longstanding and mutually co-dependent relationship,
all within a few deftly drawn pages. It's Screwball, but it's
not all light and airy. Some dark topics are broached, which
seem to take on new significance given what's going
on now.
