We were 17. A bunch of us from the NYC Metro
area had made it down to the Jersey Shore-
Wildwood Crest to be exact- away from school
parents and other supervisory agents. We ran into
similar "refugees" from the Philly 'burbs and basically
took over a hotel/rooming house. We worked as
lifeguards, pool boys, chambermaids. busboys, waitresses,
hotel clerks, boardwalk hawkers and other summer
jobs.
Sgt. Peppers had been out for about a month. Pot
was just beginning to become common. Acid was
spoken of in hushed tones by the older kids. Bobby
Kennedy and MLK were still alive. The Smothers Brother's
Comedy Hour was peaking.
We were just settling in to our new found freedom
and camaradrie. The first week often found us
gathered around the tube in the lobby after dinner-
the news came on at 7:00 pm in those days, and it
was a big deal- to catch up on what was happening
in Vietnam, and the protest movement. The MS Media,
back then, were at least half on our side. Protests were
covered. The 1968 Democratic Convention was still
in the future, as were Neil Armstrong and Woodstock.
It was a Sunday afternoon, a sunny day. The lobby was
beginning to fill with the usual pre-dinner crowd of kids,
and this came on the tube:

It was a nice start to a great summer.
