I still have--I think-- an old paperback of "Black Humor" writers
which includes "In Which Esther Gets a Nose Job" ---which is
where I read that section from V. first!....

Bruce Jay Friedman, Joe Heller (of course), Ivan Gold and others
I no longer remember.

f ) It's worth remembering the context of "Sick" or "Black" humor in the
60's/70's with the rise of Lenny Bruce along with Pynchon. That's
somebody who could really play with those Jewish stereotypes.
