I was supposed to go to grad school there, but life (not to mention
death) intervened, so ...

Told 'em I was going to "do" English Renaissance emblem poetry.  I
figured that was sufficiently scary.  The guy who'd let me in the Eng
Lit program got kicked up to Dean of Humanities, I asked him (given
the fact that, say, I'd almost never handed in a paper on time as an
undergrdaute, if at all; see also, projects as an art and/or film
student, whole exams in math and/or physics) why tehy'd evn let me in
(twice), he said, "we thought you deserved a shot at it."  It's been
all downhill ever since ...
