Escondido is an unspectacular suburb of San Diego , the Edsel was an
unspectacular bomb for FoMoCo, obviously punning on the Chevy Malibu,
Chrysler Newport, Mercury Montclair and the myriad of Western Towns &
provinces conjured up to sell overpriced, underpowered SUV's to
Yuppies.

There appears to be no Escondido, or avocado color. The sedan with
the bed, like the Ford Ranchero and others, though a very popular
category in Australia (spent many hours spittin dust in the back of a
Valiant in the early 70's), never seemed to catch on in the U. S. The
marriage of this configuration with the EDSEL is Pynchon mishigas....

"observing a rare, legendary (some believed only
folkloric) Edsel Escondido, sort of a beefier Ford Ranchero with a
complexity of Chrome accents, including around that well-known problem
grille..." (VL, Ch. 4, p. 44) Although the Edsel spotter's guide
doesn't give us an entry for the Escondido, it seems appropriate that
Mr. Vato and Mr. Blood would pull such a vehicle from one of Mr.
Pynchon's swampy Id of creativity.

HOWEVER, there is this gentleman in California who built a custom
Edsel Ranchero (sounds pretty similar so far) which looks like a
beefed up Ranchero (check out the picks, it does) in the 1980's (!)
which he eventually "sold to a fellow in Napa"! Perhaps, Mr. Pynchon
still owns this car? Yet, it exists... It LIVES!
