Sodomitical squabbling, one's tempted to just say "eeww"
but neither one of these guys is less than formidable, in
his own way, so...
a) why can't Yashmeen just leave town? She's actually
got a job, and must have papers to have gotten in?
b) apparently Ratty, congenial interrogator though he may be,
lacks what they call on "The Wire" the suction
to do anything for her; so Cyprian has to escalate to Theign?
c) Theign can do more from Venice than Ratty
can do from Vienna? Or, Ratty's turned them down?
d) Theign knew before Cyprian walked into the pensione
about the footsie thing...(Where is the trust?)
e) He's hinting that the price of Yashmeen's (whatever)
will involve long and arduous travels through desolate spaces
for Cyprian ??? (I must remember to remember this
conversation a few pages hence in medias of Cyp's residence
in the wild) -- or, they both
know this is gonna happen and DT is just making
a scene to remember
f) reference once again to the fabled tools of the Turks.

apparently this is a print?

723 14 "Derrick. You want me to assault you."
"How intuitive. Enough to know better than to try, one hopes."
"Well. If this isn't just as manly as it gets."
Lotsa levels there...just to name a few, we have:
simple physical threat;
Cyprian intuits that Derrick wants Cyp to attack him;
Derrick tacitly admits that and - I guess - "hopes" anyway;
that Cyprian won't because DT with superiour spy dirty-fighting
will hurt him;
So he actually does care about Cyprian;
who sees it all and caps it with a comment about their manliness...
probably more could be done with this exchange,
but I'm spent
Tomorrow: olio, melange, fits and starts, summary,
exhortation and mad-prop-sending
