Bridging the worlds of high art and true crime, Exquisite Corpse presents a
unique perspective on the most notorious unsolved murder case of the twentieth
century--the bizarre 1947 killing of Elizabeth Short, better known as the Black
Dahlia murder.Unlike previous books on the Black Dahlia, Exquisite Corpse
provides a detailed and compelling explanation for the unusual nature of this
gruesome killing. Exquisite Corpse reveals, through visual comparisons and
historical research, what seem to be profound connections between surrealist art
and the Black Dahlia case--both before and after the murder.

The newer varieties win our admiration as soon as we see them. Should you insist
that the Dahlia is very formal and stiff we should answer that the ones to which
you refer are perhaps stiff because they were carefully bred for regularity and
symmetry, and you would look upon them as triumphs of the breeder's art if you
knew that the modern varieties have been evolved from several wild Mexican
species.

Dahlia
Any of the 12 - 20 species of tuberous-rooted herbaceous plants that
make up the genus Dahlia, in the composite family, native to higher elevations
of Mexico and Central America. The leaves of most are segmented and toothed or
cut. About six species have been bred for cultivation as ornamental flowers.
Wild species have both disk and ray flowers in the flowering heads, but many
varieties of ornamentals, such as the common garden dahlia (D. bipinnata), have
shortened ray flowers. Dahlia flowers may be white, yellow, red, or purple.
