Misha, or Grisha: a reminder that this coupling echoes the part played by
the interchangeable Ns. An unidentified speaker threatens M/G: should we
assume this is Derrick Theign? A few lines down the page he is speaking to
Cyprian (eg, "... did we forget to tell you ..."), the latter by now well
aware of his situation. He no longer addresses 'Derrick' but 'Theign'. By
the end of the section, asking why he hasn't been kept ignorant, he will
have realised he has made a pact he can't get out of (705). From one form of
bondage to another. To M/G "poor little Cyprian" is described as "your legal
ward at the time you led him, under false pretences, into an immoral life"
(704). Again, cf. the flashback to his trip to Paris with Uncle Griswold
(497).
