Dee did spend some time in Eastern Europe, attending
wizard conventions, making gold for the King of Bohemia and whatnot...
so there was some preexisting interest there, certainly

and Paracelsus represented even earlier advances...

Chinese alchemy is older yet, and culture in India still older...
Africa, some say, is where humanity first jumped up (which
is big magic)

my favorite, though, has got to be A O Spare, who
was meditating hard and his upstairs neighbor's
