now that I reread the passage, it seems more likely that
Reef is referring to his splitting from Stray.  Kit is demurring
as to the likelihood of there ever having been anything between
Dalley and him...figuring that will make parting easier...

and there are potent analogues between Kit's not having the
chance to get creatively lost in Venice, and Reef abandoning
Stray practically at the altar...both for the same reason (their father)
