I believe that plain text also works better for blind readers using screen readers.
Unfortunately, plain text seems to be going the way of the Dodo. The new version of Hotmail doesn't allow you send plain text email -- so I've started switching to the "Classic" Hotmail before posting to the Pynchon-L.
