Thanks for the comments, Michael! I've been exposed to a lot of RP English (university professors mostly) and none of them pronounced 'r' like 'w'. I don't know what the situation was in the beginning of the 20th century. About Lenin, spot on, he could never pronounce the rhotic 'r', the way it should be pronounced in Russian. When one tells a Lenin joke, he or she usually imitates this speech defect.
