As did Foley Walker on 620, the Berliner comes to Kit as an "apparition";
and whereas he seemed, in the previous section, to be outside the global
conspiracy invoked by Dingkopf, it transpires that he is in fact part of a
conspiracy of sorts, sent by Yashmeen to make contact with Kit. The scene in
inconclusive: Kit is discovered "sleeping by the fence" and Dingkopf
produces the requisite paperwork. Kit's stay in the Kolonie was initially
inspired by the textual requirement that Foley Walker's presence in
Gottingen be verified independently (ie that he be more than a figment of
Kit's imagination); at the bottom of 623 Dingkopf has appeared as a stand-in
of sorts for Foley, and this is how the Berliner will also appear
subsequently.
At the beginning of the previous section we're told "the patient seemed
anxious to speak with Kit" (626); he is interrupted-perhaps censored--by
Dingkopf. Here, Kit has become aware of "the unmistakable scent of
freshly-baked pastry" (627). He says "the resemblance is, well, amazing" (in
contrast to Dingkopf's tie). Is Kit awake? Does he have a 'real'
conversation here, and how does this scene compare to Foley Walker's
nocturnal "acts of visitation" (620)?
