(muttered aside here: I am thinking that like
Renfrew & Werfner, there's an identity between
the voice of the Chums narrator and that of the book-as-a-whole's narrator)

-- not necessarily Pynchon's

I think I see it this way as well. 

I was recently led to the concept
of 'Limited Omniscience' re fictional narrators.......sometimes
called an "effaced narrator" by ole Henry James [re The Ambassadors].
