Engels based his theories (of an ancient egalitarian matriarchy that was preempted by a patriarchal property-based society) on the work essay (book?) Mother-Right (1861) by Johann Bachofen.  Bachofen's work wasn't grounded on any particular archaeological or anthropological assumptions, but started from the premise that women's ability to give birth gave them goddess-status, and therefore, supremacy over men (apparently Bachofen never witnessed childbirth -- more nasty and visceral than godlike, IMO).  Aside from the finding of "fertility goddess" carvings in various archaeological sites there isn't any actual reason to believe that women in pre-agricultural society were dominant or equal.  Sorry, just imposing my annual dose of New Year's pessimism.

There's no question that agriculture led to disease (humans migrated to the Americas before agriculture developed, which is why there were no venereal, etc. diseases here until the Europeans brought them).  It's interesting, though, that vegetarianism (agriculture) is considered more innocent than meat-eating (hunting, in addition to industrialized meat) -- the two attitudes really clash.
