Thanks for the synopsis -- and those quoted passages are WONDERFUL. They
feed my old mental image of Pynchon doing research, finding stuff like that
and saying "nah, can't use it, just too bizarre."

For local color, the Harriman clan left their humble cottage Arden House,
now a conference center, near (natch) Harriman, NY and (natch) Harriman
State Park, overlooking the Thruway near exit 16
