Diary of a Bad Year

I enjoyed "Diary of a Bad Year" very much, although I am usually wary 
of  novels in which the author appears as a character. There even seemed 
to be a glimpse of humour every now and then, something I had not been 
able to detect in Coetzee's work before. Still, it would be too early to 
claim that the man loosens up...
