While I'm only culturally Christian and no regular Bible reader, the first
and strongest sense for me has always been the ominous, "storing up trouble
for the payoff" Biblical echo discussed in the wiki:

"the heavens that now are, and the earth, by the same word have been stored
up for fire, being reserved against the day of judgment and destruction of
ungodly men."

"But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself
wrath against the day of wrath.."

"Hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, which I have reserved against the
time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?"
