Finally caught up with the reading.

MB:
Pynchonwiki has very interesting, if tenuous, connection
betw RUSH (Rapid Unit for Shadowing and Harassment)
and Rush the rock group, noting that Neil Peart took a
motorcycle trip across North America in order to assuage
his grief for the loss of wife and child.

I took this to be a "Man From U.N.C.L.E." reference (I think you  
alluded to the old '60s spy show in another post).  The bad guys were  
THRUSH (the acronym never explained in the TV show, at any rate).
